Longevity retreats

Wellness is at the very center of our preoccupations so it is no surprise that the travel and hospitality industry is catering to that need. Based on the concept of Blue Zones, where life expectancy is longer than anywhere else on the planet, longevity retreats are becoming popular around the world.

Dan Buettner (explorer, journalist and writer), after identifying the world’s Blue Zone areas, found that the lifestyles of residents living there shared nine specific characteristics. These characteristics are called the Power 9®.

  • Move Naturally
  • Purpose
  • Downshift
  • The 80% Rule
  • Plant Slant
  • Wine at 5
  • Belong –
  • Loved ones first
  • The Right Tribe

These areas are located in Okinawa (Japan); Sardinia (Italy); Nicoya (Costa Rica); Icaria (Greece); and Loma Linda (USA, California).

In Okinawa, the Halekulani Okinawa is running a unique program of new immersive wellness retreats, including one that will give guests an insight into the  ‘Secrets for Longevity’ of the Okinawan people. Exclusive to guests at the hotel, the program is run under the supervision of the acclaimed professor Arakawa, who specializes in studying how Okinawa’s distinctive lifestyle enhances longevity and wellness.
