Prebiotics in skincare

We have all heard of prebiotics at least once. They are usually talked about when referring to the guts and digestive system. But what are they really ?

Prebiotics are non-digestible food constituents (fibers) that stimulate certain bacteria in the intestinal microbiota. They are beneficial for the health of the gut – and the health in general.

They are also are good for our skin and have been used in the form of supplements for many years now. Brands have started using them in skincare and makeup products increasingly.

To have a balanced microbiome is the key to a good skin. If you are suffering from bad skin, it might have to do with an unbalanced microbiome and the solution might be to increase your intake of prebiotics. Skincare containing them are suitable for all skin types, even sensitive or acne-prone ones.

Prebiotics have become a must ingredient for many brands and some where developed around it all together – Here are a few brands using prebiotics in some of their products to help balance the microbiome : Orveda, La Roche Posay, Biossance, Algenist.

Prebiotics and similar types of ingredients have gained popularity over the years as they are science-backed and are a concept that consumers can understand more easily than some technical ingredients they have never heard of before.

People are taking care of their wellbeing in many ways (food, exercise, supplements,…) and are always looking to find products that they feel will help in their journey to feeling better.
